THE OLIVA CHILDREN MEDICAL INSTITUTION

The Oliva Children Medical Institution in Říčany near Prague belongs to the oldest of its kind in the Central Europe. Thanks to the wonderful clima, nature surroundings and little amount of air injurants throughout the whole year, it is suitable for children patients with breathing difficulties, skin diseases and alergies.

The Institution was founded on 18th October, 1896, by Mr. Alois Oliva and his wife Luisa as a Children Educatory Institution and was prepared to accommodate 80 girls and 40 boys from the age of 10 years. The orphanage became a sanatorium in 1926, TBC preventorium in 1939-1945 and a state-owned Medical Institution for children with long-term and chronicle breathing problems in 1980. It became a beneficial organization in 1998.

The Oliva Children Medical Institution focuses principally on children with long-term and chronicle breathing problems and medicates children from 3 to 18 years of age. Children can stay in the Medical Institution with or without an attendance. There are two detached departments for the smallest patients and their parents. The stay of the attendance to a child up to 6 years is provided by health insurance. The Oliva Children Medical Institution is a contracting partner to almost all the health insurance companies in the Czech Republic.

The optimal length of stay is between 4 and 6 weeks during which a complex treatment for the patients, such as climatotherapy, hydrotherapy, sauna, individual and group breathing rehabilitation, magnetotherapy, musical therapies and hipotherapy, is provided. According to the needs and interests of the patients, the Medical Institution can offer other procedures or prolong the stay. The spirometrical examination is done regularly.

A pediatric ambulance specialized in alergology and nefrology is obviously a part of the Medical Institution.

There is a kindergarten and a primary school in the premises of the Medical Institution. The lessons are individual for all the children and concur with the subject matter of the school from which each child comes. Leisure activities enable the development of the craftsmanship and imagination of the children of every age. The most favourite activities are sightseeing trips to the Middle Bohemian District and to Prague, and also the cultural happenings in the common room of the Medical Institution.

The Oliva Children Medical Institution also provides a social help to the children, who got in living difficulties. The programme is meant for the children from 3 to 18 years old, but in no case to drug addicted, delinquents and children with behaviour disorder. The length of the stay in such cases is absolutely individual. The children can seek the psychological advice and get maximum possible help and support. Last, but not least, the interiors of the Medical Institution are fashionably equipped and conform to the European trends. It can accommodate 124 children, including the handicapped patients. The children playrooms are also parts of each departments. The Medical Institution is situated in an attractive forest park with several outside swimming pools and playgrounds in the garden.
